Teaching Assistant – Biomedical Equipment Technology
Summary
The primary responsibilities of the teaching assistant (TA) are tutoring students, assisting with the paperwork of a class, teaching the class as requested by the instructor, supervising late afternoon/evening study sessions, assisting with administrative tasks such as typing and photocopying, and generally helping to ensure that the class runs smoothly. Additionally, the teaching assistant must assist with class demonstrations, prepare lab and class sessions, teach class or lab sessions as requested by the instructor, clean up after class and lab sessions, and complete an end-of-session inventory. The teaching assistant’s daily working hours include all class and lab times, as well as additional planning and preparation time as requested by the instructor. The TA will gain further experience and expertise working in biomedical equipment environment and/or computer aided instruction environment. The TA will gain experience in communicating effectively in a technical work environment and will continue to develop biomedical equipment technology skills through his/her work.
Responsibilities
- Provide assistance to faculty members or staff with laboratory or field research.
- Develop teaching materials such as syllabi, lesson overviews, lecture/lab schedules, demonstrations, visual aids, answer keys, supplementary notes, and course websites.
- Attend lectures given by the instructor whom they are assisting.
- Provide instructors with assistance in the use of audiovisual equipment.
- Arrange for supervisors to conduct teaching observations; meet with supervisors to receive feedback about teaching performance.
- Teach undergraduate level courses.
- Inform students of the procedures for completing and submitting class work such as lab reports.
- Evaluate and grade examinations, assignments, and papers, and record grades.
- Meet with supervisors to discuss students' grades, and to complete required grade-related paperwork.
- Notify instructors of errors or problems with assignments.
- Order or obtain materials needed for classes.
- Prepare and proctor quizzes and examinations.
- Return assignments to students in accordance with established deadlines.
- Provide assistance to library staff in maintaining library collections.
- Lead discussion sections, tutorials, and laboratory sections.
- Complete laboratory projects prior to assigning them to students so that any needed modifications can be made.
- Copy and distribute classroom materials.
- Demonstrate use of laboratory equipment, and enforce laboratory rules.
- Teach work ethic, integrity and character by example.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electronics, Biomedical Technology or Electrical Engineering or equivalent or one year work experience in a university environment.
- Some experience in Biomedical Equipment repair preferred, but will train.
- Bi-lingual English/Spanish or Portuguese preferred.
- Responsible, positive role model, diligent and conscientious, excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to field a variety of personal, professional and cultural questions.
- Excellent computer skills including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.) and database management experience.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Must be able to lift/move 15 to 30 pounds and occasionally move 50-75 pounds.
- Some proficiency with electronic test equipment.
- Verifiable references.
- Successful completion of pre-employment background check.
