Biomedical Equipment Technician III/Customer Support Specialist
Summary
Serves as a technical support specialist by performing highly skilled technical and advisory work in the installation, maintenance, demonstration, repair, and customer support of complex diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices. Responsible for the complete processing cycle of refurbishing biomedical equipment. Providing a high level of technical support and training on the operation, installation and repair of diagnostic instrumentation to overseas biomedical technicians. Service includes telephone and email technical support, on-site visits and customer training as well as training of other service personnel and repairs performed on instrumentation. The incumbent may travel overseas to train BMET graduates in the use of specialized equipment. This position operates under close supervision of the Director of the Biomedical Repair Laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot, repair, service, calibrate, refurbish, and install a variety of laboratory, diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment using established guidelines from manufacturers and/or other applicable policies and procedures.
- Maintains technical information (equipment data, repair and maintenance records) in company’s web based technology.
- Supervise and direct biomedical service operations such as coordination of the whole refurbishing process, customer service, computer inventory software management, and technical service.
- Manages and executes technical training for customer service and BMT trainees.
- Writes instructional material and conducts training in the proper techniques and methods of testing, calibrating and operating medical systems to include training of end-users and biomed technicians in proper operation maintenance procedures.
- Comply with state and federal regulations.
- Develops and maintains proficiency with existing and new diagnostic products by attending product related classes and training sessions.
- Maintain productivity levels consistent with established guidelines.
- Ensure all service and documentation is complete, timely, and accurate.
- Direct activities of contractors and vendors to ensure appropriate delivery of services.
- Assist Biomedical Repair Training Program as needed.
- Assist and train international trainees on biomedical equipment repair.
- Supervise student interns and work study students.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Associates degree in electronics/computers/biomedical engineering or equivalent two year technical or military training in electronics or biomedical technology is required. Biomedical Equipment Technology degree is preferred. Military training and experience is a plus.
- Minimum 4 - 6 years hospital and/or industry progressive experience in the troubleshooting and repair of biomedical equipment as a BMET.
- A proven track record of service on complex systems, in a medical equipment environment and certification by the ICC (CBET, CLES, CRES) will be an asset.
- Strong technical aptitude and extensive knowledge of a broad range of biomedical equipment operation and maintenance. Ability to work in advanced technical situations.
- Minimum of two years of demonstrated customer support over the telephone and field service.
- Minimum one year of customers training on installation, usage and troubleshooting.
- Minimum of one year of demonstrated leadership responsibilities.
- Excellent customer service, interpersonal and communication skills coupled with logistical skills to expedite working with vendors, the Director of the Biomedical Repair Laboratory and a diverse array of customers, environments, equipment types and locations required.
- Occasional after hours emergency service.
- Familiarity with JCAHO and computer proficiency in a variety of equipment management programs is a must!
- Technical skills required for medical equipment repair school accreditation.
- Analytical and planning skills including testing summarization, estimating, documentation of costs and developing preventive maintenance schedules essential.
- Ability to communicate effectively technical information over the phone.
- Excellent proficiency in MS Office and Web-based Applications
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work well cross functionally, especially with school instructors, graduates and engineers.
- Knowledge of electronics, including solid state technology. Working knowledge of the latest and most advanced troubleshooting, calibration, and repair techniques. Ability to read and interpret schematics, diagrams, specifications, and illustrative drawings.
- Mentor and train entry level staff.
- Must be able to regularly lift/move 15 to 30 pounds and occasionally lift/move 50-100 pounds. Continuous standing, lifting, bending, crouching and twisting required.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Must have effective communication and customer service skills including technical writing and training.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, customer service and support skills.

Must have completed, updated, and/or be required to complete all vaccinations, inoculations, or medications, for overseas travel, whether such vaccines are routine, recommended, and/or required by federal and state agencies. Such vaccinations may include, but are not limited to the following:*
